Appreciation for the Wait


I wonder why in the Bible there is such a strong narrative theme of lengthy barrenness prior to fertility. It isn't just for the biblical heroes, but it is also for the people as a whole. Wanderings in the desert. The long-wait for a Messiah. The birth pains of God's future complete establishment of His reign on earth.

As my husband and I wait for God to answer our prayers for a child, our congregation waits for God to give us a permanent home. The journey seems long, but in the context of eternity it is really short. And it seems like the waiting makes the fulfillment all that more meaningful!  The waiting helps us to realize where our priorities lay and helps us to have a greater appreciation of the treasure that awaits us.  Kind of like heaven.  The older we get, the more we appreciate the vision for this future with God.

Did you ever read or hear the story about the three little pigs?  They each built a house using different construction material.  The first built his house of straw. The second of wood. The third of brick.  A wolf comes along and asks to enter each home with each pig responding that he won't let the wolf in.  So the wolf decides to blow each house down and is successful with the first two, but not the third. Thinking Differently

As I read the beginning of Revelation and the various commentaries I begin to realize that I've come to some of my own interpretive conclusions that don't necessarily match with any mainstream thought.  Surprised? (Sarcasm alert!) The new question my brain has created today has to do with wondering if there is any significance to there being seven continents. Yes, I'm talking about the land masses of our globe: Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, North America, Antarctica, and Australia.  Since the number seven is symbolically significant in Revelation, is there any significance to there being seven continents?  This is even a new thought to me, but what if each of the seven churches of Revelation represent the churches of each continent?  Have we taken a look at this book from a global, instead of just western perspective? Coming Home to Freedom: Be the Change!

Devotional Reading: Philippians 4:1-9 You know the saying, "be the change you want to see in the world"?  There is some truth to those words of wisdom.  I don't know about you, but I find that regardless of how much I try not to be influenced by the negative culture around me, somehow its climate seems to be contagious.  And yet, God calls us to be something different. " In the world, but not of it".... as goes another saying. In today's Scripture we are encouraged to find a place of similar mindedness with those with whom we are having difficulty getting along.  We are instructed to find our joy in Jesus Christ.  We are encouraged to cast our anxiety with thanksgiving on Jesus, knowing that he does care for each of us. And then we are told to think and put into practice "whatever is true... noble... right... pure... lovely... admirable... excellent... praiseworthy."
