Coming Home to Freedom: Be Strong

Devotional Reading: Haggai 2:1-9
"Be Strong."  How often have you needed to hear those words?  Apparently the people really needed to hear them, as they are recorded three times in this text. Once to their political leader, once to their religious leader, and once to the community as a whole. "Be Strong and work.  For I am with you," declares the LORD Almighty.  God continues, "And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear."

Did you ever read or hear the story about the three little pigs?  They each built a house using different construction material.  The first built his house of straw. The second of wood. The third of brick.  A wolf comes along and asks to enter each home with each pig responding that he won't let the wolf in.  So the wolf decides to blow each house down and is successful with the first two, but not the third. In 1 Corinthians 3 we read: 10 " By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. Forgiveness: Do Not Hold a Grudge

One way to hear God speak is to listen to themes that appear in your life.   I’ve heard a very loud theme this week that I believe I am to share with you as a congregation. On Tuesday, a church member asked me about the part of the New Testament prayer that reads, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”   This church member was concerned about the “as” part of this prayer and the realization that we generally are not as good at forgiveness as God is. Then yesterday, a different church member brought up this same statement from the Lord’s Prayer and shared how every Sunday when we pray the same person’s name comes to this individual’s mind. Thinking Differently

As I read the beginning of Revelation and the various commentaries I begin to realize that I've come to some of my own interpretive conclusions that don't necessarily match with any mainstream thought.  Surprised? (Sarcasm alert!) The new question my brain has created today has to do with wondering if there is any significance to there being seven continents. Yes, I'm talking about the land masses of our globe: Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, North America, Antarctica, and Australia.  Since the number seven is symbolically significant in Revelation, is there any significance to there being seven continents?  This is even a new thought to me, but what if each of the seven churches of Revelation represent the churches of each continent?  Have we taken a look at this book from a global, instead of just western perspective?
